WHY NOT LARGE PRINT?

Large Print is often thought of as something just for readers with visual impairments or the elderly. Not so! Studies have shown that Large Print titles used in a classrooms lead to reading confidence, improved letter and word recognition, better comprehension and pure reading enjoyment. Why? Because larger print means there are fewer words on the page. As a result, struggling readers have less to visually process. Their anxiety levels drop. A positive sense of accomplishment is developed and reading skills improve. This “less is more” philosophy applies to those learning English as a second language as well. Readers make significant progress with comprehension and fluency while making fewer decoding mistakes. In the end, students become successful, confident, lifelong readers.
How about the rest of us? Ever spend the day in front of a computer and gone home with burning, tired eyes? Well, the 14 point (or larger) font and jet-black ink of a Large Print book may be just what you need to rest those tired eyes. Like to speed read and your favorite title in regular print is checked out? Try it in Large Print. Library patrons report that the same bestseller that in regular print takes five to seven days to read in Large Print takes them only two to three days. Looking for a good beach read? Large Print books are printed on anti-glare paper so while your book catches some rays, your eyes catch a break.
Why Large Print? Why not!

MARSHFIELD PUBLIC LIBRARY OFFERS BLU-RAY DVDS TO PATRONS

Marshfield Public Library begins offering a test selection of Blu-ray DVD titles in their library, adding the innovative digital format to their existing DVD collection.

Why offer the Blu-ray DVD format?  Picture quality.  According to the Blu-ray Disc Association’s website, high-definition (HD) video produces an amazingly sharp picture with vivid color and five times the amount of detail of the current standard-definition (SD) video.  Traditional DVDs only support SD and don’t have the storage necessary for the HD resolutions.   Blu-ray also supports high-definition audio formats and lossless audio.  On top of that, the extra storage on a Blu-ray disc along with the new BD-J interactivity layer allows for more content, special features, menus and graphics that overlay without stopping the movie, downloading extras, updating content via the Internet and watching live broadcasts of special events.

The only draw-back:  Blu-ray DVDs can only be viewed on a Blu-ray player and won’t play on a standard DVD player.  On the positive side, Blu-ray players are expected to be “backwards compatible” so that consumers don’t have to worry about their current collections becoming obsolete. Additionally, many of the Blu-ray players will support the up scaling of DVD picture quality so that traditional DVDs will look better than ever!

We invite you to try a Blu-Ray DVD and let us know what you think!  If you like them, we’ll begin adding more to our collection.

LIBRARY ROOM RESERVATIONS & EVENTS ONLINE!

Marshfield Public Library is happy to announce that E·vanced Solutions software now appears on the www.marshfieldlibrary.org website to serve you better. E·vanced Solutions’ E*roomreserve and E*vents are two online systems for room reservation management and an events calendar with online patron registration. Collaboration with our generous partners, Friends of Marshfield Public Library and Marshfield Public Library Foundation, enabled this software purchase that will greatly benefit both our patrons and our staff. Online room reservations means that you will know from you home if a library room is available and spend less time booking MPL’s Beebee Forum Room or General Meeting Room. The online events calendar simplifies program promotion for us and allows you to register for library programs without leaving your home. You will also be able to check dates for library or community programs at the library via the Internet. Developed by librarians, E·vanced Solutions’ allows us to “spend more time helping patrons and less time managing paperwork.” We think it is a win-win.
